PM Meles died after being treated abroad for the last few weeks, the Council of Ministers announced.
The Council said PM Meles was visionary leader for the Ethiopia and steadfastly worked for the renaissance of Africa.
PM Meles has been representing his country and Africa at international forums to consolidate peace and stability.
The Council decided Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Hailemariam Dessalegn to be in charge of acting Prime Minster of the country.
The Council said the funeral arrangements would be announced soon.
