The Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II has sent a message to Pope Benedict XVI upon his resignation in which he expressed “brotherly love in Christ” and heartfelt wishes for “peace in the spirit and health in the flesh”.
Pope Tawadros wrote that Pope Benedict’s decision to resign the papacy moved him deeply. “We are certain this decision was taken in the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, following fasts and prayers.
“Our Coptic Orthodox Church,” Pope Tawadros said, “sees in Your Holiness a high spiritual calibre, and deeply appreciates your concern with theological dialogue and the rapprochement of the Churches. And we can never forget your support for our Church during the hard and painful times in our recent history.
“We are praying for Your Holiness,” Pope Tawadros concluded, “asking the Lord Jesus Christ to bestow upon you health, strength and long life. And we ask for the intercession of the Holy Virgin and all the saints to guide the Catholic Church in choosing a new spiritual leader.”
The message was sent to Pope Benedict through Anba Barnaba, the Coptic Orthodox Bishop of Rome.
